The Triple Crown of USA Walking Trails

Thursday Dec 9, 2010  By: Travelwriting
Category:

If you are a hiker, then the USA has more than its fair share of trails for you to discover. Across all the states of the union you will find a broad variety of trails to showcase the range of wildlife and landscapes within the country.  From north to south, east to west, wherever you are walking, USA trails will impress you. Start planning your walking holiday by investigating the options on the Triple Crown walking trails in the USA listed here.

Appalachian Trail

One of the most famous trails in the country for walking is USA’s Appalachian Trail. This 3500 kilometre trail was conceived in the 1920s and, since it was made especially for hikers, it is blessed to have many facilities put into place. Every year scores of hardcore hikers attempt to complete the whole trail; for everyone else there are guided walking tours available to take you to some of the more impressive sights along the way. One of the most popular and acclaimed portions of the trail is called The Pinnacle. After a rocky ascent you are greeted by spectacular views of Hawk Mountain and the Lehigh Valley.

The Continental Divide

Stretching 5000 kilometres from Mexico in the south to Canada in the north, the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail offers limitless possibilities for USA walking tours. This trail includes the Rocky Mountain National Park and Yellowstone National Park, where there are plenty of amazing walking tours that can be taken with local expert guides. In New Mexico some of the noted points on the trail include: Cibola National Park, Gila National Forest, Cumbres Pass and Carson National Forest. There is a Continental Divide Trail Society that is able to recommend different short walks and tours along the extensive trail to meet your individual or group walking needs.

Pacific Crest Trail

The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the states of Washington, Oregon and California and extends for 4260 kilometres. Most of the trail passes through national forest and includes some of the country’s most pristine wilderness. Some of the major areas on the Pacific Crest Trail in the California portion where you can find walking tours include: Big Bear Lake, South Sierra Wilderness, Cajon Pass, Kings Canyon National Park and Lessen Volcanic National Park. In Oregon – Three Sisters Wilderness, Diamond Peak Wilderness, Warm Springs Indian Reservation and Cascade Locks offer different opportunities for walking tours. In Washington there is also plenty of choice, with Glacier Peak Wilderness, Mount Rainier National Park, Stevens Pass and Alpine Lakes Wilderness just a few of the locations where you can find walking tours.

USA walking tours can take you through all types of terrain with the Triple Crown trails. Most of the United States’ premier walking and hiking paths are connected to one of these three major trails. Regardless of whether you are a serious hiker looking to conquer some of the more demanding trails or a casual walker interested in the diversion of a gentle hike and a bit of fresh air, there are tours with expert walking guides that will suit your needs. Discover the world by walking – USA awaits.

Walking Costa Rica – the Monteverde Cloud Forests

Thursday Dec 9, 2010  By: Travelwriting

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve has to be one of the most dazzling areas in all of Costa Rica. It is located in the Cordillera de Tilarán mountain range about a four hour drive from Costa Rica’s Central Valley, and has several different options for walking. Costa Rica is one of the few places in the world where you can see cloud forest and it has been selected as one of the top seven wonders of Costa Rica. If you have any appreciation at all for natural beauty, you will be blown away by the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve on one of the featured guided tours involving easy walking. Costa Rica has perfected the eco tour market in recent years and one of the best examples is to be found at Monteverde.

The Basics

The reserve is located at 1400 metres above sea level, and the altitude, the tropical climate, and the high rainfall causes cloud forest to grow here. There are nine main trails that cover a total of 13 kilometres, although with your walking guide you may be able to venture further into the reserve and visit some of the old research stations along the way. There are several ways to see the reserve: you can take a normal walking tour along the forest floor, scale high into the canopy with the Sky Trek suspension walk, or get a bird’s eye view with a daring tour of the reserve by flying along a zip line rather than walking. Costa Rica’s most verdant and lush plant life found in the beautiful surrounds of Monteverde.

Bio Diversity at Your Fingertips

Within the forest reserve there are several micro climates which make for some highly concentrated bio diversity. There are more than 500 species of orchids alone found in this reserve, with 34 of them having been recently discovered. Other plant species that decorate the forest with their lush colours include bromeliads, mosses, ferns and vines. You can find a wide variety of animal life throughout the reserve from the more than 60 species of frog, to tapirs, ocelots and hundreds of bird species.

Which Trails are Which?

When hiking the trails in the reserve, you do not generally need any special equipment or hiking shoes and the trails are suitable for people of any fitness level. To see some of the strangler figs throughout the reserve, the best trail to take is the 1.9 kilometre Cloud Forest Trail; to spot butterflies or indulge in some bird watching, the best trail is The Road; the River Trail takes about an hour and half to complete and includes a side trail to a waterfall, and the Sky Trek on the suspended bridge offers a breathtaking view of the forest.

A holiday walking Costa Rica would be incomplete without a trip to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. There are early morning and night walking tours that are also available at the reserve to give you the chance to discover the different residents of the reserve – be they early risers or nocturnal. The early morning tours are perfect for bird watching enthusiasts and by night you will see plenty of frogs and nocturnal mammals making their rounds.

Take a Walk in Costa Rica

Thursday Dec 9, 2010  By: Travelwriting

All throughout Costa Rica there are national parks that protect the bio-diverse flora and fauna of the Central American nation. In fact, Costa Rica would have to be one of the most pro-active countries in the world when it comes to national parks and wildlife protection. One of the best ways to get to know the local fauna and plant life is by walking. Costa Rica is now easily accessible with travel companies offering tours with bilingual guides and using sustainable tourism methods to ensure that the forests and their residents are around for generations to come.

Manuel Antonio National Park

One of the best loved national parks along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica is the Manuel Antonio National Park. Here you can stroll along easy hiking trails with your guide and see a variety of howler, titi and white face monkeys, as well as sloths, iguanas and tropical birdlife. Once you work up a sweat you can cool off in the crystal clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. By many accounts this is one of the best places for walking in Costa Rica.

Hanging Bridges

Hanging Bridges is one of the most popular walking tours and tourist attractions in the country. The suspension bridges are perched high in the canopy, face to face with the lush vegetation and affording views of the Arenal volcano. There are various walking tours that you can take here such as the ‘early bird’ bird watching tour. This tour starts at 6am and you can see up to 60 species of bird life during the tour. The daytime naturalist tour showcases the biodiversity of the surrounding forest and the chance to see some local wildlife. The night walk tour shines a spotlight on the jungle under the stars and you can see nocturnal frogs, birds and mammals in their night time playground.

Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero National Park is comprised 19,000 hectares on the Caribbean coast and it is best known for its green turtles. It is also home to 13 out of 16 Costa Rican endangered species. These include: ocelots, tapirs, jaguars, cougars, manatees, crocodiles, toucans and giant iguanas. There are four species of turtle that use the national park beaches to lay their eggs and you can take tours in the right season to see them hatching and making their way to the water. Park guides can take you through the mangroves, by the lagoons, through forests and along the beaches in this expansive national park.

Strolling Through Rare Cloud Forest

One of the most dazzling micro climates in the country has to be that which is provided by the cloud forests. There are walking tours through Monteverde and Juan Castro Blanco National Park where you can experience rare cloud forests. Monteverde is well set up for eco walking; Costa Rica’s government is still yet to finance much infrastructure at Juan Castro, but the advantage of this park is that it is still largely undiscovered by the tourist masses. At Monteverde you can also choose to take a thrilling zip line tour over the forest canopy for a bird’s eye view.

There is abundant wildlife and plant life to be discovered while walking in Costa Rica. In recent years there have been many sustainable tourism companies springing up to offer fascinating walking tours of the country from Pacific to Caribbean coast.

3 Top Walks in Costa Rica

Thursday Dec 9, 2010  By: Travelwriting

Costa Rica has some of the most startling natural beauty of anywhere in the world. There is true diversity offered up when taking a tour and you get to see everything in so much more detail when walking. Costa Rica walking and hiking tours can take you through cloud forests, skirt the rims of volcanoes, and through lush mountain forests. There are many national parks and reserves that can be included in tours when walking Costa Rica, where you can discover why this part of the world is considered one of the most bio-diverse on the entire planet.

Monteverde Cloud Forest

Cloud forests are those found on mountains in tropical regions where there is a very high rainfall which leads to lush forest that is filled with verdant flora. On a walking tour through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve you will pass through several micro climates, meaning that there is a wide array of plants, birds and wildlife to be seen. The reserve has 9 different trails that you can trek along – some of them including suspension bridges perched high in the canopy. If you have an adventurous heart and an iron nerve, then you can also try the Skytrek Zip Line tour on which you are connected to a cable and zoom above the tree tops at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour.

Arenal Volcano National Park

Walking Costa Rica on a guided tour can offer you the chance to see an active volcano close up and soak in geothermal baths at Arenal Volcano National Park.  Arenal is the most active volcano in all of Costa Rica, and you can follow walking trails along lava trails from past eruptions. There is much secondary forest that can be explored along the trails on the slopes of the volcano. In addition to walking tours, there are also horse back and zip line tours.

Manuel Antonio National Park

Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the most famous locations for walking in Costa Rica and an absolute must on any visit to the country.  Located on the Pacific Coast, the national park forest meets white sandy beaches and is home to an astounding array of wildlife. A cacophony of brightly coloured toucans and parrots herald your arrival, and howler, white face and titi monkeys can be seen throughout the park alongside sloths and iguanas. The hike is manageable for just about any fitness level. Don’t forget to bring your swim-suit to enjoy cooling off in the waters of the pristine Pacific Ocean beaches in the park.

The country is famous for its eco tours and companies specialising in tours walking Costa Rica pride themselves on their sustainable tourism values. One of the things they do to ensure there is minimal impact on the environment is to keep to small tour groups. Costa Rica has 32 different national parks covering more than 13 per cent of the country; this means that there is plenty to see and loads of walking tours are available to help you discover the incredible landscape.

Kenya – Walking, Wildlife and Bird Watching

Thursday Dec 9, 2010  By: Travelwriting
Category:

Does gazing up at the snow capped peaks of Mt. Kenya, sharing grasslands with grazing elephants, the chance to see hundreds of bird species, or meeting Masai warriors and exchanging stories around a camp fire appeal to you? Kenya has a massive variety of wildlife, natural beauty and cultural richness to discover. If you have been dreaming about a trip to the African continent and the chance to get up close and personal with some of the world’s most fascinating animals, then Kenya walking, wildlife and bird watching holidays are for you. By choosing a guided walking tour with a reputable and expert company you will form long lasting memories and a life long respect for the stunning land of Kenya.

Kenya walking tours can offer several different options ranging from day tours that last only a couple of hours to guided walking tours that take place over longer. There are also a variety of walks that you can take through native forests, close to mountain peaks, in the midst of fertile and fauna rich valleys, and along savannah plains. Leave the planning & arrangements to the experts and let your adventure begin!

A Unique Insight into Kenya

Kenya walking tours offer a different way to experience the African landscape. These tours are a tranquil and intimate way to get to know the sights and sounds of Kenya away from the chug chugging of car motors. On these tours you are also supporting locals who provide the guides and animals to transport your luggage and equipment. You can get to know the way that the locals live and get a taste of authentic Kenya. Walking tours also have little impact on the environment and local habitats, so you can ensure that the lands you are marvelling at will be around for your children and grandchildren to discover one day too.  Responsible and sustainable tourism practices are used wherever possible.

What Can I See and Experience?

Such walking tours give you the chance to snap close up shots with virtually every African animal that you care to name. You can see zebras, glimpse herds of elephants, meet black rhinos, graceful giraffes and gazelles, lions, leopards, hippos and wildebeest. You can also visit native tribal villages and get to know their cultural traditions, bathe in hot springs and climb mountain escarpments. There is something completely disarming and memorable at every twist and turn on a Kenya walking tour. Some of the typical locations included in Kenya walking tours are: the Great Rift Valley, Loita Hills, Masailand, Mt Kenya, Laikipia Plateau, Karisia Hills and the old growth forests of the Leroghi Plateau. The local tribes that are usually visited on these tours are the Masai and the semi-nomadic Samburu people.

How Fit do I Have to Be?

You don’t need to be especially fit to take the walking tours and keep up the pace. If you are fit enough to make it through a gentle hike, then you are going to be fine with a Kenya walking tour. Tours offer you all the creature comforts including hot showers, comfortable accommodation, specially prepared three course meals and air conditioned transport to and from your walks.

Walking in Northern Kenya – Top Sites to Visit

Thursday Dec 9, 2010  By: Travelwriting
Category:

Northern Kenya offers some of the most spectacular landscapes across the entire African continent. For a memorable and unique way of experiencing the natural beauty and wonder of the region, a Kenya walking tour is an excellent option. Within the one walking tour, you will have the chance to meander through the grasslands and see native African wildlife, get to know local tribes and their traditions, wander through old growth forests, and hike through valleys and rolling hills. These walking tours offer the chance to combine comfort and adventure for a truly special experience.

What Can I Expect from the Experience?

You will normally start in Nairobi and then head to the north by local transport or plane. Northern Kenya walking tours with an experienced English-speaking guide may also have a local tribal guide and local camp staff.  You will have hot showers and comfortable amenities and sleeping arrangements. Each night you will be presented with delicious three course meals and wines to wash them down with. Being at one with the African wilderness does not mean you need to compromise on your creature comforts.

Sights and Sounds of Northern Kenya

You will literally be blown away by some of the sites that are included on a Kenya walking tour. Nowhere in the world does wildlife quite like Africa, and the best of the best is available in Kenya – roaming free! At Saramburu National Park, and other destinations in the north of the country, you get the chance to see gazelles, zebras, elephants, black rhinos, lions, leopards and giraffes. Aberdare National Park is often included in Kenya walking tours and gives you access to some stunning panoramas and local wildlife feeding by night at Tree Tops, a tree house hotel. Despite the incredible sites at the park, it is surprisingly tranquil and the only crowds you will see are of local wildlife, rather than people.

Another area that you should make sure to include on your Kenya walking tour is the Laikipia district, which is nestled between Mt Kenya and the Great Rift Valley. In this district you can visit with local Saramburu, Boran and Kikuyu tribes and learn all about their customs and traditions. This lush region has abundant wildlife and acacia and cedar trees dotting the landscape. In the Great Rift Valley you can visit one of the lakes such as Lake Nakuru or Crater Lake and see flocks of bright pink flamingos lounging glamorously on the shores. The ominous sounding Hell’s Gate Gorge is a chance to see natural geysers and impressive rock formations in addition to the variety of birdlife there. The best place to meet the big cats in Kenya is Masai Mara, where you can also learn about how one of Africa’s famous warrior tribes, the Masai, live.

If you want to avoid the crowds and sample the real Africa, then Kenya walking tours can give you the authentic experience. Many companies offer you the chance to tailor make your walking tour and select the elements that really appeal to you in northern Kenya.

Eco-Walking in Kenya

Thursday Dec 9, 2010  By: Travelwriting
Category:

The Kenyan landscape is tapestry of contrasts, with expansive grass savannah plains, dramatic mountain ranges, lush valleys, and volcanic craters and gorges. One of the best ways to see the countryside up close is through a Kenya walking tour. Along with expert guides, these tours can offer you an ecologically responsible way to really get to know the countryside as well as providing you with a touch of luxury.

What to Expect

In general you are met in Nairobi by an English speaking guide and you can choose between short day trips and walking tours that last as long as two weeks. If you are taking tours where you will be staying overnight they are set up so that you do not want for anything. You can count on hot water for bathing, well appointed accommodation in spacious luxury tents, and delectable three course meals that are specially prepared for you by local camp staff. In some cases you are able to design your own walking tour and include destinations that really fascinate you. There is normally a minimum of two people required to form a customised walking tour but your best option is to book a group walking tour with a reputable company.

Sustainable Tourism

Kenya walking tours ensure that they are not having an adverse or negative impact on the local environment. For a start, they do not make use of gas guzzling safari cars to get you up close to the wildlife; with your very own two feet you get to see the countryside, up close and personal, in a relaxing and tranquil manner. Food is prepared fresh, which means that there is no rubbish produced in the cooking process. Staff who assist at the camps and help with transporting your luggage are locals, and you are thereby offering them employment opportunities that they would not have otherwise had. In every possible aspect, the walking tours are ecologically sound and follow sustainable tourism practices.

Top Sites to Visit

Many Kenya walking tours offered are centred on the Great Rift Valley and its surrounds. There is such diversity in the flora and fauna of this region, as well as dazzling variance in the landscapes, and you will be blown away by the sights before you. You can discover Crater Lake, Hell’s Gate National Park, Crescent Island and Lake Elementaita, and mingle with the herds of elephants, gazelles, zebras and giraffes well away from the crowds and smoggy safari buses.

When you imagine Africa, you will most likely conjure up images of grasslands, prowling big cats, grazing giraffes and hippos lazing in muddy waterholes. For this kind of experience Masai Mara is just what you are looking for and the region is a highlight of Kenya walking tours to this part of the country. You can see lions, cheetahs, leopards, hippos, elephants, giraffes and topis, and take advantage of truly incredible photo opportunities without flocks of tourists vying for space with you.

A Kenya walking tour gives you the chance to discover some of the continent’s most impressive landscapes and animal reserves with the help of expert local guides in an environmentally responsible manner. Walkers of all ages and fitness levels can take part in these tours and keep up the pace.

Tony Maniscalco is the Sales and Marketing Manager for Ramblers Worldwide Holidays. They offer over 250 guided group walking holidays in over 65 different countries. While in Kenya walking with Ramblers Worldwide Holidays, you will see scenic locations & landscapes at the best value prices.

5 Top Kenya Walking Attractions

Thursday Dec 9, 2010  By: Travelwriting
Category:

Kenya walking tours provide access to some of the country’s most spectacular sites. They are unique because they give you the opportunity to discover, at close range, the wonders of the Kenyan landscape without the tourist crowds. You will be accompanied on your tour by expert guides and get the opportunity to learn more about traditional customs and ways of life. For a more intimate Kenya experience, taking a walking tour cannot be beaten.

Aberdares Game Sanctuary

Channel your inner Tarzan and stay in a tree hotel, while spotting black rhinos feeding by night right below you. By day the open savannah awaits you and with your guide you will get to marvel at some of the most beautiful grassland sights, surrounded by local wildlife. Imagine strolling along the plain as herds of zebra graze within metres of you: it doesn’t get much better than that.

Hanging Out With the Big Cats at Masai Mara

Masai Mara is the ancestral land of the famous Masai tribe and the stomping ground for many native African big cats. In the one day you can find yourself sightseeing with lions, cheetahs and leopards and, once the sun has set, sharing stories around a camp fire with Masai tribes people. If you want to see the Africa that magical memories are made of, then Masai Mara is an essential inclusion on your Kenya walking tour.

Great Rift Valley Sites

The Great Rift Valley is an area that is rich in natural wonders that can be discovered on a Kenya walking tour. This area is a popular inclusion in walking tours as there is much diversity in the sites. They are easily reached and you do not have to contend with the crowds encountered at the “big five” parks in Kenya. One of the most dazzling sites in the area is to be found at Nakuru National Park; there, thousands of flamingos assemble daily to show off their stunning plumage. Other national parks within this area include Hell’s Gate, Crater Lake and Crescent Island, and they are all flush with African wildlife wandering free. You will, for example, come face to face with herds of giraffes, gazelles, zebra and elands.

Mt. Kenya

Mt. Kenya walking tours generally begin on the Sangare Ranch, a 6500 acre wildlife reserve, where you will get to see African game animals. From there you can visit a Black Rhino reserve, which has the highest concentration of black rhinos on the continent. Mt. Kenya hiking and walking tours generally involve walking at altitude: the highest point on one of these tours is Point Lenana at around 4900 metres. Tours that include Mt. Kenya will generally need to be longer to allow for acclimatisation due to the altitude.

Swara Plains

Swara Plains has the distinct advantage of being only thirty minutes from Nairobi, but has an abundance of wildlife to see. With more than 20,000 acres, you will have the walking trails to yourselves with only your guide and the animal residents for your companions. You can find giraffes, monkeys, impalas, hartebeest, warthogs, gazelle and even giraffe necked gazelle on the ranch.

If you really want to get to know the true Africa, then you should start planning to visit Kenya. Walking tours of the countryside give you the chance to get to know the land in a more intimate way, and in a way that is far removed from the crowded tour buses and safari trips. A small guided group tour is by far the best and safest way to explore this magnificent country.

Walking USA – Hiking Alaska’s National Parks

Thursday Dec 9, 2010  By: Travelwriting
Category:

When it comes to exciting and adventurous walking, USA holidays are hard to beat. The sheer variety of scenery and the stunning natural landscapes make for an ideal choice of holiday. However, if you want to head to a national park, why not avoid the more famous names and head to one of the lesser-known parks, like Wrangle – St. Elias National Park in Alaska.

A Wild Adventure

Wrangle – St. Elias National Park is the biggest national park in the whole of the USA, at 20,587 square miles. To put it in perspective, that’s nearly six times bigger than Yellowstone. That’s a lot of prime space for walking! USA parks are mostly well known, but this vast wilderness is not visited half as much as other national parks in the country, making it ideal for those who want to enjoy thousands of square miles of emptiness all to themselves.

If you head here you’ll find over 150 glaciers including the spectacular Hubbard Glacier, and some of the tallest mountains in North America – including Mount St. Elias, the second highest mountain in both the USA and Canada. It also contains nine of the highest 16 peaks in the USA, so as you can imagine this is some serious terrain.

As well as walking, USA parks like Wrangle – St. Elias also offer a wide variety of other activities, including kayaking, rock climbing and rafting. But for many, the excellent walking is the main draw.

Easy Access

Despite its remoteness, Wrangle – St. Elias National Park remains relatively easy to access. This means that hikers can visit without too many difficulties and still enjoy vast swathes of emptiness. There are also no fees, making this one of the more affordable national parks in the country to visit.

Prepare Yourself

As is the case with any type of holiday that involves walking, USA holidaymakers need to make good preparations if they want to have an enjoyable time. Due to its vast size and remoteness, many of the hiking trails in the park are not maintained, and this could make the going tough if you are not fit and prepared for the challenge. You will not find paved and signposted trails, and it will be essential that someone in the party is able to read a map and compass. The park also experiences extreme variations in weather in very short time periods, making it essential to dress accordingly, with layered clothing, the ideal option.

Getting There

Wrangle – St. Elias National Park is remote, so you won’t want to make this just a day trip. It will take you about a day to drive from Anchorage to the town of Nabesna from where you can start hiking. Alternatively, you could opt for a charter plane to arrive much quicker.

Experience the Wild

Wrangle – St. Elias National Park is an absolute treat for anyone with a love of walking. USA national parks provide the perfect setting for an ideal holiday, and if you want to experience true wilderness then this is the park for you. For the best experience head here in the summer from May to September.

There is an incredible variety of wildlife to see here, from rare and endangered creatures like the harpy eagle to incredible mammals such as the jaguar and the puma. There are also plenty of monkeys and hundreds of other wild creatures to encounter.  Add to that the wide range of vegetation, and the fact that it is one of the last large areas of lowland tropical forest in the world, and you can see why it is so popular with people who love adventurous walking. Costa Rica is well known as a great place for exciting holidays, but if you want to get the most from your trip you need to go prepared.

Advice for Visiting Corcovado National Park

When you go walking in Corcovado National Park, there are a few things you will have to consider first. Remember that, although the park relies on tourism, bad tourism practices can actually harm the precious environment more. The ecology is sensitive and if not managed carefully the results can be harmful. For this reason you should always wash down your gear, especially your hiking footwear, before entering the park to avoid transferring any seeds into the area when walking. Costa Rica authorities will also remind you that common sense rules apply – such as never leaving anything behind or dropping litter in such a delicate environment. The time of year that you go is also important. If you head to the park between August and November you will arrive in the wettest time of year. However, you will get more of the park to yourself because there will be fewer other visitors. But if you want to play it safe and stick to the dry season, aim to arrive from January to April.

Enjoy the Wonders of Costa Rica

For lovers of walking, Costa Rica has it all. Plan your trip well in advance and when you visit Corcovado National Park you’ll enjoy an experience that will stay with you for a long time to come.
