If you have an image of holidays in the Balearic Islands that consists of packed resorts and forests of high-rises, then think again! For holidays in Menorca, Son Bou caters for the holidaymaker that is looking for a little more tranquillity and natural quiet charm.
Menorca – the calm island
The Balearic Islands sit off the Spanish coast nestling in the beautiful Mediterranean. Menorca is one of the smaller islands of the group and has worked hard over the years to retain its small island charm and culture. Many people argue that it has successfully managed to fend off the temptations of over-development that have blighted some Mediterranean destinations.
Over the centuries many peoples, including the Romans, Moors and British, have ruled it – each leaving their own particular legacy. The capital city of Mahon (it was actually the British who made it the capital in the 18th century) is a charming town based around the second deepest harbour in the world. It’s full of ancient appeal, historic buildings, shops and boutiques and is well worth a look.
Best of Menorca -Son Bou
This is a resort based around one of the longest and best beaches on the island. It is oriented towards the slightly more discerning visitor and as such, it’s often regarded as being ideal for families and those looking for a quieter and rather more relaxing holiday. It comprises not only hotels and villas that provide the accommodation around the beach, but also a range of other attractions and facilities.
The Beach
With fine golden sand, the beach stretches for between 2 and 3 kilometres. It is separated from the resort and for the most part protected by sand dunes and reed beds meaning that you feel that you’re in a secluded area. These reed beds and dunes are a haven for wildlife – particularly migrating birds. Those areas can be explored if you’re interested in wildlife and bird spotting.
What makes the beach doubly appealing is that bathing is generally regarded as safe for all. Even so, the water is open and as with most beaches, caution is always advisable – particularly where children are concerned. It is important to pay attention to any Red/Amber/Green flags and any ‘on-the-day’ local advice. The beach is served by a number of unobtrusive bars and restaurants, so you won’t be too far from refreshment if you need it after a period of sunbathing and swimming!
The town
A relatively small and discrete resort on Menorca, Son Bou is unlikely to make you feel that you’re in a large town. Part of the resort is based around hotel and apartment style accommodation that typically caters for families and more mature holidaymakers. A little further back from the beach there are some developments of luxury villas used by some for their holidays or by permanent residents.
The culture is generally best described as ‘laid back’ and unrushed. There are a variety of restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and budgets and some of the larger hotels also have in-house entertainment for nights out.
Sights and diversions
In and around the general area of Menorca’s Son Bou there are plenty of things to do apart from just soaking up the sun. There is a waterchute where you and your children could pass a happy few hours just doing nothing but frolicking. There is also the Maze where visitors try to find their way around a maze looking for tokens in the process – expect some magical visitors and interruptions while you’re trying to do so!
There are a variety of shops in the resort selling a wide range of clothes and goods. A little further away (about 5 miles) is the town of Alaior with a local market on Thursday mornings. It’s also worth making the relatively short trip to the capital Mahon for a look-around and also the original capital Ciudadela which has a very unique old-world charm. Monte Toro is also worth a trip. It is the highest point on the island (though it’s only around 1200 feet) but the church on the top and the spectacular views are not to be missed.
If you’re looking for a little more relaxation and sophistication and a little less hectic holidaying during your stay in Menorca, Son Bou could be ideal.

Want to go on a family holiday to Cala Galdana? Follow these tips to make the most of your trip to the “Queen of the Calas”.
If you are planning on visiting Menorca for a family holiday, Cala Galdana is likely to be your destination of choice. The resort is stunningly beautiful, with a picture postcard horseshoe bay, golden sand, dramatic cliffs and lush, verdant greenery inland. Small but with plenty to do, the more relaxed nightlife makes it a much more peaceful place to be than some of the more active resorts such as Son Bou and Cala en Porter.
It’s a near perfect destination for a family holiday, and Cala Galdana is an even more enjoyable place to stay when you have the knowledge to make the most of it. Here are a few useful hints and tips for your holiday in Cala Galdana…
Be Careful of the Cliffs!
The natural scenery is a large part of the appeal of a holiday in Cala Galdana, with villas delicately balanced on steep stone cliffs overlooking the bay. But this can mean negotiating a large number of steps to get down to the beach – If you have very small children, or any family members with mobility problems, those steps can be problematic. So when you are booking your hotel or villa in Cala Galdana, make sure you ask about how easy it is to access the beach from your accommodation of choice.
Don’t Miss the Horse Show
The beach is always going to be the central attraction of a holiday in Cala Galdana but it isn’t the only place to spend your time. One essential trip to take is to the horse club at Club Escola Menorquina, located a short distance from the resort itself. The horses of Menorca are renowned for the quality of their breeding and training and the horse shows (held every Wednesday and Sunday in the summer) are jaw dropping spectacles. Entry is €14, and under 12s go in for free, making it a perfect attraction for a family holiday in Cala Galdana.
Bring Your Own Supplies for the Beach
Parasols, sun loungers, and pretty much every other piece of beach equipment you can think of are available for hire at Cala Galdana, but the costs can add up, especially for larger families. Naturally, packing enormous sun loungers is likely to be beyond your capabilities, but take as much as you can – you’ll make considerable savings simply by bringing along some large beach towels and parasols of your own.

With its laid back island culture and stunning beaches, Menorca is the perfect destination for a relaxing holiday in the sun. Learn more about five of the best beaches in Menorca…
Menorca is famed as one of the most relaxing holiday destinations in Europe. Less touristic than Mallorca or the Costas, it offers a traditional island culture, relaxed atmosphere and stunning natural attractions. There are numerous outstanding hotels, apartments and villas in Menorca and there’s plenty to see and do on the island, from the horse show in Cala Galdana to the panoramic sights from the summit of Mount Toro. But without a doubt the biggest attraction for a holiday in Menorca is going to be the beaches.
The island has more beaches than Ibiza and Mallorca put together, ranging from long, bustling beaches to peaceful little coves. Whether you want to enjoy fully developed beaches close to the hotels and villas of Menorca or secluded stretches of sand where you can swim and sunbathe in peace and quiet, you are sure to find a beach here that is perfect for your needs. Here are five of the very best beaches on the island…
Cala Pregonda
Perhaps the finest secluded beach on the island, this stunning bay features crystal clear water and is backed by tamarisk and pine woods. It is unspoilt, with a few nearby Menorca villas the only local buildings. It is hard to get to, a twenty minute walk from Binimella, but the effort is well worth it.
Punta Prima
Located in the far south east of the island, this beach is a long, attractive stretch of sand that is well populated with bars and restaurants. The strong currents mean that it is sometimes not safe for swimming, but the beautiful sand and stunning vistas more than make up for it. Parents should supervise their children at all times due to the strong waters.
Cala Santa Galdana
Cala Galdana is one of the best beaches on the island, combining plenty of facilities with a beautiful and unspoilt beach. This horseshoe bay is the most photographed beach on the island, and it is especially good for those on a family holiday in Menorca due to its safe shallow waters. But adults will delight in the natural beauty that surrounds Cala Galdana.
Son Bou
Son Bou is the longest beach in Menorca, a glorious 3 km piece of sand that has plenty of bars and watersports facilities to keep visitors entertained. It is big and usually packed solid, so it isn’t the place to go for privacy, but it is one of the finest large beaches on the island. Make sure you check the flags on the beach before you swim, as the currents can be strong.
Es Grau
Located close to Mahon, the capital of the island, Es Grau is one of the most naturally beautiful beaches on the island. The shallow waters in this horseshoe shaped bay are great for family bathing, and just behind the beach is the wetland park of Albufeira, a stunning national park filled with wildlife and fauna.
Whether you want to stay in a resort hotel or a secluded rural villa in Menorca, or are there for a family holiday or a romantic getaway, you are sure to find a nearby Menorca beach that is perfect for your needs!
